Death of UI student to be investigated

The identity of the University student who was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at Carle was released by the Champaign County Coroner Wednesday.

Deeptangshu Chatterjee, a senior at the University, was found in a parking lot next to his apartment building located in the 500 block of South Third Street. Chatterjee was a former member of The Daily Illini sports staff. 

According to a press release from Duane Northrup, Champaign County coroner, Chatterjee was found lying in the parking lot, injured. He was taken to the emergency room at Carle but was pronounced dead at 10:20 a.m Tuesday morning. 

The death is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the Champaign Police Department; following a preliminary investigation, investigators are not ruling out suicide or an accidental incident as the cause of death, according to the release.
