College of Medicine updates

The Board of Trustees will vote on establishing a Doctor of Medicine degree for the Illinois College of Medicine at its Thursday meeting.

Interim Provost Ed Feser said the college has hit all of its milestones so far and is cautiously optimistic it will stay on schedule. In September, Dr. King Li was hired and he began work in October, while several dozen people worked on a five-phase process.

Phases run from achieving learning objectives to designing the delivery methodology and framework used to deliver curriculum, he said. Curriculum is a case-based model that integrates engineering and basic health sciences.

Li is currently recruiting his staff, particularly associate deans, Feser said.

“I can report the dean has hit the ground running,” he said. “I have already signed two invention disclosures that the dean has brought here, so he is off, collaborating with colleges already and not just developing the college but also establishing his own work on the campus.”

Appointments

The board will vote on Barbara Wilson’s new role as the executive vice president and vice president of academic affairs. Wilson formerly served as the interim chancellor at the Urbana campus and has been serving in the interim role as executive vice president since October.

Additionally, the board will vote on Martin Camargo as interim dean of the College of LAS. He has served since Nov. 1 as interim dean. Wilson was originally going to resume her role as dean of LAS once Chancellor Robert Jones began, creating the need for an interim dean. Feser said an internal search is already in process. Camargo will earn $217,874, which includes an administrative stipend of $50,000.
