Elections open for students to vote on ISS Constitution

By Jessica Bursztynsky, Staff Writer

Illinois students can vote on a new referendum proposed by the Commission on Constitutional Reform of the Illinois Student Senate. The ballot, accessible online at vote.illinois.edu, is open until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.

The proposed constitution, placed on the Fall 2016 Student Referendum, will allow Illinois students to vote for the Student Body President and Vice President during the Spring Student Elections, instead of the current system in which the Illinois Student Senate internally elects them.

The new constitution would also allow the Illinois Student Senate to include representatives from groups other than academic colleges, as well as create the Student Court as an equal branch of government.

In order to be placed on the referendum, the constitution had to obtain signatures from five percent of the student body.
