UPDATE: Centennial High School student died Saturday

A Centennial High School student died Saturday night at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Luke Miller, of Champaign, was pronounced dead at at 9:53 p.m.

Over an hour earlier, Champaign police responded to a report by the Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department that Miller, 15, was receiving medical treatment.

The Saint Louis City Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 13.

The results of the autopsy are pending additional laboratory analysis and testing, according to the Champaign Police Department press release.

“Until additional testing is complete, a determination as to whether the death was a result of a traumatic injury or medical issue is not possible. Therefore, no additional comment regarding the cause of death will be made at this time,” the release said.

Champaign Police officers will be at Centennial high school to monitor safety and speak with students. The police report said preliminary information suggests the death was an isolated incident.

Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand issued a statement in response to Miller’s death.

“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the tragic loss of Centennial student Luke Miller over the weekend. Starting tomorrow, we will be supporting our Centennial and Jefferson communities with access to grief counseling. We are fully cooperating with the police in this matter. To preserve the integrity of the investigation, the District has been asked by the Champaign Police Department not to comment on or provide details regarding this situation.

“Our thoughts at this time continue to be with Luke’s family and friends. The Champaign Police Department is investigating the death and asks that anyone with information call the Champaign Police Investigation Division at (217) 351- 4545 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 373 – 8477.”
