Andreas Cangellaris, former professor, researcher and dean at the University, has been named the new vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost.

Cangellaris served as the head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering until 2013, prior to leading the College of Engineering.

Research work also qualified Cangellaris for the position; he is widely recognized for his research in applied and computational electromagnetics.

Cangellaris has created many microelectronic industry design methods and computer tools that are widely used. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has received a Humboldt Foundation Research Award and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory Director’s Coin.

“The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the most well-respected public schools in the nation,” Cangellaris said. “So being named to this position is a great honor and a privilege.”

Cangellaris said this position is a higher honor than those he previously received; he sees being chosen as a form of honor and recognition from the University.

“Very few leadership roles have the gravity that the provost of the campus has,” he said.

Cangellaris’s leadership skills paved way for his new role. He, along with other faculty members and administrators, developed a plan that led to the creation of the new Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

In addition, the new Siebel Center for Design will be introduced in spring 2018 due to the preliminary work developed by Cangellaris and other collaborators.

Cangellaris was selected by a search committee led by Vikram Amar, dean of the College of Law, and was selected among a number of applicants.

Cangellaris has big plans for the campus in his new position.

“The plans are several and are being informed by conversations with the leadership of the University and the faculty,” he said. “Right off the bat, we worked with the campus to put in place a new budgeting model that will make us stronger and much more nimble in looking after our mission and the priorities that make us an accessible, excellent institution.”
