The long-lasting construction on Green Street has begun to clear up, revealing new bus stops in front of the Union on Nov. 17, 2017.

MTD buses are now running on Green Street in front of the Illini Union, a popular bus stop in the heart of campus.

Starting on December 4, MTD reroutes related to the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project, MCORE, will be lifted off of Green St.

The buses that will return to their regular routes are the 2/20 Red, 8 Bronze, 13/130 Silver, 22/220 Illini and 21 Raven, according to a press release.

While the 5/50 Green and GREENhopper will remain on the reroutes for several weeks, they will also begin to service the Illini Union.

Bus-only lanes, pedestrian islands, and new bus stops have been added to Green Street. It is important to note that the Illini Union stop has been moved from the south side of Green Street to the east. Now there is a single stop for all MTD buses to stop at one platform. The stop at the north side of Green Street has been split up into a curbside stop and an island stop.

Alex Kirr, sophomore in Engineering, said he finds the running of buses between his classes on the engineering quad and main quad convenient for him.

“I take buses every day,” Kirr said. “And I think I like (the new system) more, so far, because the buses are more streamlined.”

However, Abhi Gupta, sophomore in Engineering, disagrees. He said he prefers the previous Green Street bus system.

“Right now, the bus is just confusing,” Gupta said.

He said the new features of the bus station make him unsure of which stop to go to.

Sameer Sharma, graduate student in mathematics, said he can live with the pros and cons of the new system.

“Because most of my classes were in computer sciences, earlier during the construction, it’s also convenient for me,” Sharma said. “I’m okay with the new system. I’m just indifferent because (the previous system was) also good.”

All route changes are available at cumtd.com or via various transit apps.
