The homepage of the University of Illinois admissions page encourages viewers to visit campus virtually on Friday.

The University has expanded the virtual tour system; prospective students can now set up virtual meetings with admissions counselors, attend daily info sessions or speak with current students from their future colleges.

“It’s one thing to see photos or videos of campus, but it’s another thing to have access to real people,” said Doug Burgett, director of marketing and communications from the Office of Communications for Enrollment.

Virtual tours are nothing new to the University, since there is a large population of out-of-state students who cannot visit the campus easily. Due to the coronavirus halting all in-person tours at the University, the virtual tours have become more important for prospective students.

“It is extremely important for us to help prospective students see our campus and experience student life from afar,” Burgett said. “That means having virtual tours and sharing student stories, through photos, videos and blogs.”

The University has also implemented new online touring resources. The video series “Touring Time” began in late January, and it profiles a new campus landmark every week.

“Our goal is to offer a lot of different ways for people to see our campus and experience student life, that way there’s something for everyone,” Burgett said.
