Letter: Learn by example

Congratulations to Richard Herman on his selection as Chancellor, and kudos for his statement that “We must revitalize our commitment to educating students to realize that they enhance their lives and the lives of their families when they give back to society,” as reported on April 20 in the Daily Illini.

As Chancellor Herman well knows, we all learn by example. Recently, graduate students who work for the University received a letter from the Insurance Office informing them that dependents added to University insurance would be subject to an automatic classification of “pre-existing condition” for the first 12 months of coverage and thus, presumably, denied compensation for needed services. This would seem to indicate a lack of concern on the part of the University for the health and well being of the children of graduate employees. Graduate employees would appreciate it if Chancellor Herman would direct his staff to investigate and reverse this policy.
