Leggings: Not a trend for everybody

By Jerry Vachaparambil

If you think abortion is divisive, don’t ask girls about leggings. Every girl I talked to on campus is passionately for or rabidly against leggings.

I spoke with 95 girls on campus last week: 73 were in favor of the fashion style; 22 opposed it.

Although I don’t know much about high fashion, it seems as if this leggings frenzy is not confined to the college campus but embraced coast to coast. Like every trend, it’s been revolving in and out of style for centuries, for both men and women.

From Shakespeare at the Globe Theater to Tom Cruise (Under Armour leggings when he goes for a run), this style has endured the test of time.

I never really pay attention to clothing trends, but I can’t resist noticing girls who sit next to me pantsless. It always reminds me of the day in second grade when I went to school in what I thought were cool new shorts but were, in fact, a pair of my dad’s boxers.

I can appreciate the agony endured by cute women, who endure the bitter cold of winter by choosing an “eco-friendly” alternative to pants, but this style is not for everyone.

Leggings in winter make their owners ornery.

There’s no point in getting mad at the world because of the existence of certain styles we just can’t pull off.

Our attitudes can change based on the clothes we wear. I have nothing against leggings; it’s the surliness of certain leggings wearers that isn’t trendy.

Leggings won’t transform snobby mean girls into gregarious people persons; personality is still the key.

Even though a lot of girls see leggings as a preferred style to attract gentlemen, we shouldn’t denigrate the entire trend. Leggings are awesome, especially when they’re worn subtly with skirts, long sweaters and even jeans.

They can even be great on their own sometimes. My dad uses them as skin-tight athletic apparel, and my resident adviser said he enjoys seeing women who can confidently wear leggings without the slightest concern of the drooling boys they may encounter.

That said, I hope no girl perceives this to be an open call to flaunt her stuff.

Everyone likes to be noticed, but leggings are not a collegiate method of attention-seeking.

I understand that comfort isn’t always the only determining factor in choosing our daily apparel, but by this age, we should all know that a few extra glances when we walk down the Quad are completely useless.

Extent of skin exposure is vital in determining the appropriateness of this trend. Thighs are great, as long as they’re not meant to be seductive.
