How to bring good feng shui to your room

For thousands of years, people all over the world have been using feng shui to harmonize their living environments and to improve their lives.

Feng shui is more a lifestyle change and less a set of rules which must be strictly followed. This makes the practice perfect for college students because it is budget-friendly, flexible and open to individual interpretation.

Step 1: Declutter your life

The driving force of feng shui is “chi,” positive energy that flows through space. Things like clutter, bad smells, dirty clothes and an unmade bed all disrupt the flow of chi.

You will immediately feel a difference in the chi in your room after you have completed this step.

Start off with making a pile of items you no longer need or want, and toss them. Next, categorize everything you own and plan a designated space for them.

There should be no junk drawer, your clothes should be folded neatly in your closet and there should be no loose items like pens or papers on your desk. You should be mindful of the presence and placement of every item in your room.

Step 2: Purify the air in your room

Open your windows and your door to allow air to move through your room. Open all the blinds and let in natural light.

This will freshen up your space and make you feel more connected to the world. Try to air out your room a few times a week. You will notice that the air you breathe is much more pleasant and satisfying.

Also, consider investing in a humidifier and an oil diffuser. The air in dorm rooms and apartments can become very dry. A humidifier can help you feel less dehydrated and keep your skin from drying out. A diffuser used with scents like lavender, sage or eucalyptus will make your room more soothing, and they are also healthier than traditional air fresheners.

Step 3: Get a plant

Whether it’s a set of succulents or a big spider plant, plants are pretty much essential in feng shui.

The color green represents harmony and can liven up any room. Also, many plants have air purifying qualities. If you’re worried about killing your plant, pick one that requires as little care as possible.

A bonsai tree is a great option because each tree is unique and adds character to your room.

Though they can be expensive, finding a reasonably priced tree is not hard at all. Check out local flower shops to find your perfect plant and be sure to get advice on how to properly take care of it.

Step 4: Accessorize your room

A patterned rug or tapestry can bring the room together. If you get a rug, place it in the middle of the room to balance all sides. If you are in a dorm, consider lofting your bed and putting your rug underneath to create a cozy nook.

When putting up pictures, be mindful of the spacing. Don’t just randomly tape stuff up.

Make sure there is a pattern and that everything looks uniform. Remember, wall decorations should enhance the room without disrupting the flow of chi.

Use colors to enhance the energy of your room. Every color adds something new. A yellow seat cushion, a purple flower pot or a red throw pillow can be exactly what you need to balance out your space.
