Final matches key for women’s tennis

The game plan heading into the Fighting Illini women’s tennis team’s last regular-season matches are the same as they have been all season: aggressive doubles play and confidence on the court.

“We want these matches to give us momentum heading into the Big Ten Tournament,” head coach Michelle Dasso said. “We have to trust ourselves while we are out there and make our opponents earn it.”

Iowa and Minnesota, two of Illinois’ Big Ten rivals, will have to work hard for every point. But, both being fairly young teams, the Illini are not sure what to expect.

“Both the teams we are going to play have fairly new teams,” junior Momei Qu said. “They have had pretty big changes to their lineups, so I don’t have any expectations carrying over from last year.”

The Illini are focusing on rounding out the season with two strong matches and will use this weekend to prepare for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.

Due to some illnesses earlier in the week, the team has taken practice easy the last few days. It has been focusing on the basics, still perfecting doubles play and still playing for every point.

After losing to the Big Ten leader Northwestern Wildcats, the Hawkeyes will be looking to rebound against the Illini. Coming into the contest with a 9-9 record, Iowa will be hosting its final home matches of the season.

The No. 57 Gophers are led by senior Ashley Schellhas, who was recently named Big Ten player of the week. She will face freshman Megan Fudge, who is coming off back-to-back wins against Indiana and Ohio State.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the Shahid and Ann Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex will take place at 10 a.m. today. The team is excited about the new addition and feels it will help attrac new recruits.

“I’m ecstatic about it,” Dasso said. “It will have an additional 12 outdoor courts.”

The team refuses to dwell on the past and remains focused on the games in front of them

“Hopefully our most memorable moments will come at the end of the season,” Dasso said.

The games on Saturday and Sunday will begin at 11 a.m.
