Softball 2-2 after loss to Penn State

By Kate Munson

A day after the Illini women turned in a dominating performance against Penn State, the Fighting Illini found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided score.

Illinois fell to the Nittany Lions 13-0 in five innings at Penn State Saturday, making them 2-2 in Big Ten play.

Lions’ senior pitcher Ashley Esparza did not allow a hit in five innings pitched. Only two Illini reached base in the game. Freshman second baseman Danielle Zymkowitz reached via a walk in the first and senior centerfielder Sarah Bryers reached on an error in the fifth.

Illini senior pitcher Claire DeVreese dominated the Lions on Friday, giving up just one run in six innings. But she surrendered seven runs, four earned, in just one and two-thirds innings on Saturday.

The Fighting Illini will continue Big Ten play on Sunday with doubleheader in Michigan.
