Two Illini added to NCAA Outdoor Championships field

By Wes Anderson

Two members of the Illinois women’s track and field team received at-large bids to next week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships Tuesday.

Senior Briana Cunningham will participate in the 400-meter hurdles, while sophomore Aja Evans will compete in the shot put in Des Moines, Iowa. They will join four other Illini who have already earned automatic berths.

Both athletes missed out on receiving automatic bids at last week’s NCAA Mideast Regional Championships. Both Cunningham and Evans finished sixth in their respective events, one spot short of earning one of the five bids allocated in each event.

In order to be eligible for at-large consideration, an athlete must finish in the top 12 in an event at an NCAA regional while having a high national ranking in that event.

The NCAA Championships will be held at Drake University from June 11-14.
