Illinois soccer hands Colorado College first loss in shut out

The Illinois soccer team avenged its 0-2 campaign last weekend, knocking off previously undefeated Colorado College with a 2-0 shut out Friday night. The shut out was the team’s eighth at home since they started their home winning streak last season, which extended to ten games after Friday’s victory.

The Illini (5-3) took the lead early on after a kick by Chichi Nweke from the right flank deflected off Tiger goalkeeper Geneva Sills. Colorado College (6-1-1) had a chance to tie the match up with a little over ten minutes left in the game. Within seconds, Tiger forward Sydney Fetter had two shots on goal, which bounced off the right post and crossbar, respectively.

The shots fired up the Illinois offense as Marti Desjarlais sealed the game with a goal assisted by Laura Knutson with less than five minutes remaining. It was her second goal of the season.

The Illini will play Washington at Illinois Soccer Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. and will look to increase their undefeated streak at home to 11.

“It’s not a lot of time (to prepare), so a lot of it is in physical recovery,” said head coach Janet Rayfield. “We’re going to talk about how we can be better in our midfield. Our midfield on both sides of the ball tonight, I did’t think, played at the level they’re capable of.

“We’ve got to do a better job of keeping the ball, finding our midfielders with the ball … they are capable of playing a much better brand of soccer than what we saw tonight.”
