Illini baseball defeats No. 1 LSU on the road

The Illinois baseball team knocked off No. 1 LSU 3-1 Friday night, handing the Tigers (9-1) their first loss of the season.

With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Illini (6-1) catcher Aaron Johnson blasted a two-run home run over the wall in left-center field, instantly silencing a sellout crowd of 10,246.

The loss is LSU’s first at its new home, Alex Box Stadium.

The Illinois pitching staff put on a stellar performance, limiting an offense that had averaged 12 runs per game on the season to only nine total hits. Phil Haig started on the mound for the Illini and pitched seven innings before being relieved by freshman Corey Kimes. The left-handed Kimes was credited with his first career win.

LSU first baseman Sean Ochinko continued his explosive start to the season, hitting 3-for-4. But the junior, who had previously racked up 21 RBIs in nine games, failed to record one against the Illini.
