The Illinois (19-8, 4-3 Big Ten) baseball team was knocked from its position atop the Big Ten standings Friday night, when it lost the first of a three-game series with Michigan, 4-2, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Senior pitcher Chris Fetter went the full nine innings and recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts in picking up the win for the Wolverines (19-11, 4-3).

Hits from freshman John Lorenz and senior Kevin Cislo gave Michigan a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Illini then tied things in the fourth with a two-run double from junior Matt Dittman, but that proved to be the end of the Illini’s scoring on the night. Michigan recorded runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to ensure the victory. Fetter struck out two of the final four Illini batters to close the show.

Sophomore shortstop Anthony Toth batted 2-for-4 and scored two runs for the Wolverines, while Lorenz, a

native of Frankfurt, Ill., finished the evening 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Sophomore lefty Phil Haig was charged with his second loss of the season for the Illini after allowing three earned runs in seven innings of work.
