Hockey’s winning streak ends

The Illinois hockey team’s winning streak was stopped Friday, as it fell at home to Kent State, 2-0.

Outshooting the Golden Flashes 42-28, the Illini struggled all night to solve goaltender Anthony Gregory.

The Illini had eight power-play chances but came up empty-handed each time as Gregory frustrated the Illini with an assortment of saves.

Kent State’s points leader, Justin Phenney, netted the team’s first goal midway through the second period, slipping the puck through the legs of an Illini defender before firing a shot over Illinois goalie DJ Kohler’s right shoulder.

Forward Ryan Thomas tacked on the second goal six minutes into the third period on Kent State’s fifth power-play opportunity.

The Illini had a chance to tie the game four minutes into the third period when forward Tim Gilbert collected a loose puck in the Illini zone and raced down the length of the ice alone, only to slip a shot behind Gregory that narrowly missed the net.

The Illinois will look to salvage a split in the series Saturday. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
