Wrestling falls at Indiana

The No. 20 Illinois wrestling team dropped to 1-2 in the Big Ten with a 22-13 loss at No. 14 Indiana on Friday.

The Illini were in a big hole early as they trailed 8-0 after just two matches, due in large part to a technical fall earned by No. 1 Angel Escobedo over John Deneen at 125 pounds.

The team didn’t quit though and fought all the way back to within two points at 15-13 heading into the final two matches. However, an upset by Indiana’s Matt Powless over No. 9 Patrick Bond and a major decision by No. 2 Nate Everhart over Pat Walker sealed the victory for the home team. Overall, the Hoosiers scored four bonus points to just one for the Illini.

Senior John Dergo, currently ranked No. 2, earned his 12th straight win by recording a major decision over Eric Cameron. Sophomores Jordan Blanton and Eric Terrazas and junior Ryan Prater also earned victories for the Illini, whose overall record drops to 6-5 heading into Sunday’s matchup at Northwestern.
