Hebert takes 1st at Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special

In the last meet before the Big Ten Indoor Championships beginning Feb. 27, the Illinois men’s track and field team sent a group of a chosen team members to attend the Eastern Illinois University Friday Night Special over the weekend. The Illini competed against a large field of schools that included Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana state and Southern Illinois.

The Orange and Blue had several strong showings at the Lantz Indoor Field house in Charleston, Ill. Freshman Jordan Hebert won the 3,000-meter run in the time of 8:36.17. Sophomore Phil Pompei followed Hebert with a time of 8:43.86 and a third-place finish. Also with a high placing was junior Alex Baldwin, who took fourth in the pole vault with a 4.77-meter mark.

Freshman Morrison wins triple jump

Freshman Kristin Morrison was the top performer out the small group of Illini women’s track and field athletes who competed at the EIU Friday Night Special over the weekend. The team, which included seven freshmen, rested its usual starters to prepare for the Big Ten Indoor Championships next weekend.

Morrison won the triple jump with a jump of 11.21 meters, while her teammate, junior Kelly Washington, placed second in the event.

Courtney Yaeger posted the best finish of the six distance runners who competed, as she was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter race. Freshman Kelsey Seiler and junior Maggie Mulchrone took sixth and seventh in the 3,000, respectively.
