The No. 3 Illinois men’s gymnastics team sustained it’s first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 359.650-358.650 to No. 4 Michigan in Big Ten action. The Illini had serious problems finishing routines, leading to several falls on dismounts and very few sticks.
Junior Paul Ruggeri in particular had a rough meet, sustaining a minor knee injury on during a fall on his floor exercise and later falling on vault, two events on which he ranks in the top 10 nationally.
Still, Illinois posted its highest score of the season and showed it could hang with a rival even on an off day.
The team was lead by sophomore Tyler Mizoguchi, who won the all-around title with a score of 87.8 and won five of the six individual events.
Ruggeri (high bar), Mizoguchi (parallel bars), seniors Chad Wiest (floor exercise) and Luke Stannard (pommel horse), and freshman Yoshi Mori (vault) all took event honors.
