Buckeyes find themselves atop the rankings once again

For the first time in nearly a year, there is a new No. 1 in college football.

The Ohio State Buckeyes, fresh off a 38-10 win against Indiana last week, have stepped into the No. 1 ranking following then-No. 1 Alabama’s 35-21 loss to South Carolina.

“We don’t talk about it,” Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel said about the No. 1 ranking. “I’m sure people talk about it to our guys.”

This is the fourth time that the Buckeyes have found themselves at the top spot in the rankings under Tressel, and the first time since 2007.

“The thing that we try and do, regardless of where we’re ranked, is get better, or we’ll be ranked lower than where we happen to be,” Tressel said. “You have to make significant improvements each week. The good teams that end up getting closer to their potential each year are the ones that have the incremental improvement.”

And even though Tressel and his Buckeyes aren’t spending too much time talking about their ranking, their opponents this weekend have noticed. Ohio State will be playing at Wisconsin this Saturday.

“I did point out to our guys that I don’t want to put my head in the sand and act like it’s not there,” Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema said about facing the top team in the nation.

“There have been a lot of college football players who have gone their entire careers and have never played a No. 1 team.”
