Soccer closes out regular season with 1-0 win over Wildcats

The No.16 Illinois soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 win over Northwestern. It was senior night for the Illini (13-4-1, 5-3-1 Big Ten).

Defensive co-captains Danielle Kot and Krystin Miller, goaltender Alex Kapicka, defensive midfielder Laura Knutson and forward Jordan Hilbrands all played their last regular season game at Illinois Soccer Stadium. Hilbrands played her first game since Illinois beat Yale on Sept. 5. The Bexley, Ohio native fractured her fibula two months ago in practice.

Sophomore forward Niki Read scored her second goal of the season, a game-winner in the 84th minute of the match. Reads took a pass from freshman DiBernardo, dribbled unchallenged by any Northwestern defender and buried a shot right into the right corner of the net.

The win all-but-clinched a NCAA tournament bid for the Orange and Blue. Selected teams will find out if they are part of the 64-team tournament Monday.
