Baseball advances to NCAA tournament

NCAA tournament regional pairings were announced Monday, with Illinois being placed in the Fullerton region in Fullerton, Calif. Joining the Illini will be Cal State Fullerton, Kansas State and Stanford.

The four teams will begin play on Friday in a double elimination bracket, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals June 10-13. The games will be televised on ESPNU, with times yet to be announced.

The Fighting Illini advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000 with a 9-1 victory over the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday. The win finished off a perfect 3-0 Big Ten Tournament for the Illini, who claimed their first conference tourney title in 11 years.

Catcher Adam Davis was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player while also being named to the All-Tournament team. Also earning all-tournament honors were starting pitchers Corey Kimes and John Anderson, first baseman Matt Dittman, center fielder Willie Argo and designated hitter Justin Parr.
