Linebacker Martez Wilson hospitalized after late-night incident

Early Friday morning, Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson was involved in an incident that necessitated he be taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Illinois Assistant Athletics Director Kent Brown confirmed Friday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m. that Wilson was treated at the hospital and was in stable condition, but would not comment on specifics of what happened.

Champaign Police Sgt. John Schweighart, who is now working the case, was unavailable to elaborate on Wilson’s condition or details of the incident. Carle Hospital chose not to release information concerning Wilson or his condition.

A release issued by the department confirmed that police were called to the campus bar Fubar, 306 E. Green St., at 2:04 a.m. in reference to a fight in progress. When police arrived, those involved in the fight had already begun to disperse.

Around 2:44 a.m., police were called to a local hospital when a stabbing victim from the incident came in for treatment.

According to the release, the man was trying to assist another male being surrounded by a group of men following a verbal altercation at the address.

The release did not specify the name of the victim or which hospital police were dispatched to. It was also unclear whether the incident occurred inside or outside the bar.

The Daily Illini learned of the incident around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning, however, members of the DIA were not available for comment and Carle would not confirm or deny a patient by that name was admitted into the hospital.
