The Illinois men’s golf team may need a trophy case just for Tinervin Cup trophies after bringing home the tournament’s trophy for the 13th time Monday..
Illinois defeated host Illinois State by a 7.5-1.5 score at the par-71, 7,038-yard Coral Creek Golf Club in Placida, Florida.
Dylan Meyer and Thomas Detry combined for eight birdies in 12 holes to win their match, 8 and 6. Meyer opened the match with a birdie on each of his first three holes.
Alex Burge and Edoardo Lipparelli had seven birdies in their 5 and 4 win. Charlie Danielson — who ranks sixth on Golfweek’s individual poll — and Nick Hardy won their match, the last of the morning matches, 3 and 2.
Illinois did not lose any of the singles matches in the afternoon, but Hardy walked away with a tie.
The Illini are now 13-0 in the Tinervin Cup — their first event of the season, and are looking to make their ninth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance at the end of the spring.
“Once again, this was a beneficial trip for our team,” Illinois head coach Mike Small said. “We were able to play some good competition at a quality golf course and to gauge our games moving forward into the spring. Now we have an idea of the issues we need to address and improve on.”
The Illini have won four of their last five tournaments. The team plays its next tournament on Feb. 29 at the Louisiana Classics Invitational in Lafeyette, Louisiana, which the Illini have won for three consecutive years.
