Kwong earns Big Ten honor

By Tim Griffin, Staff writer

Junior Illinois women’s tennis player Louise Kwong received Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors earlier this week. This is Kwong’s first weekly honor of her Illinois career.

“Louise was very deserving of the Big Ten Athlete of the Week and we are really happy for her,” head coach Evan Clark said. “After the Rutgers match she really made some key adjustments and has really looked like herself again. She was able grind through some tough matches and that has given her a tremendous amount of confidence and we are excited to see what she has left for us this year.”

Kwong received this honor following her standout play last weekend versus Iowa and Nebraska. In singles play, she beat Iowa’s Anastasia Reimchen 6-1, 6-4. Then on Sunday, she defeated No. 75 Maggy Lehmicke of Nebraska in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.

Kwong’s doubles play has also been strong. Kwong and her doubles partner freshman Ines Vias have earned a top 50 ranking in the country and are undefeated in the Big Ten.

The last Illini to receive this honor was Melissa Kopinski in 2015.
