Illinois travels to Grand Canyon in first road swing of the season

By JJ Kim, Assistant Sports Editor

After squeaking by Nicholls State in its first game of the regular season, the Illinois men’s basketball team will travel to Phoenix, Arizona, to take on the Grand Canyon Antelopes Friday night.

Sophomore guard Ayo Dosunmu went 8-11 from the field, totaling 21 points and tallying seven rebounds against the Colonels. Senior guard Andres Feliz notched his first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 23 points, shooting 7-14 from the field with 11 rebounds. Two other Illini scored double-digits, including sophomore forward Giorgi Bezhanishvili, who scored 11 points, and center Kofi Cockburn dropped 10.

The Illini dominated the glass in their first outing of the season with a 30 rebound margin between them and the Colonels, which led to 15-second chance points.

Like the Illini, the Colonels had four players who scored double-digits, led by senior guard Carlos Johnson, who tallied a team-high 22 points.

The Colonel’s demise came from beyond the arc as they only made one three on 10.5% shooting.
