Dignity in heritage
February 23, 2007
In November of 2006, I had the pleasure of attending the men’s basketball game at Assembly Hall between your Illini and the Terrapins of the University of Maryland. I made the roughly 11 hour journey across the country to not only cheer on my team, but to witness the traditions and pageantry of your school.
While I was disappointed to see how our school and fans were portrayed on your cheer sheets, I was proud of the dignity with which you treated your Native American heritage. I never thought that it would be considered offensive, just like the Seminole of Florida State.
I am glad to see the grassroots support you are creating for your Chief. It is important to allow all of our traditions to carry on for future generations, despite the desire of a small minority to always appear politically correct. Good luck with your battle and I hope I will be able to make the journey to see the Chief perform again.
