Column: All aboard the model railway

By Jim Vorel

This was one of the most fun stories I’ve done during the time I’ve been writing for The Daily Illini. This kind of story is one of my favorites to do – a student group that you probably haven’t ever heard of before. For most people, it doesn’t mean anything, just another group of people who are doing what fascinates them. But for one or two people out there, an article like this might introduce them to something they’ve always wanted to do but didn’t know anyone else at the University was interested in.

I would recommend that anyone and everyone check out this group. Stepping into its cellar of a room under ISR, you will not believe how detailed and how immaculately laid-out its model railway is. It begs to be witnessed in motion. The club is open to all comers and would be especially be happy to see some women interested in model trains.

The club has more than doubled in members since the article first ran, and it is building a new storage section to hold all the club’s new locomotives and cars. The club still meets every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. All aboard!
