Wrong solution

Regarding Paul Cruse III’s Feb. 25 column, “Another party, another fight,” I believe that the suggestions made to prevent fights would ultimately be ineffective. I do not understand how a dress code for black events will prevent fights. Also, preventing people who do not go to our university from attending events on campus is overdramatic and would hurt the University as a whole.

While there are fights at campus bars from time to time, management handles the situations, sometimes with the assistance of police. This current event was much larger, with 1,200 or more people, according to The Daily Illini. Since the Central Black Student Union was not able to control the situation it took many police to control the fights that occurred at the event.

While it may not be possible to prevent a fight, as an organization you must be able to take action and hold responsibility. The pressure should be put on the Central Black Student Union, or any other organization, to prevent or control a situation that ‘gives the whole black student body a bad name.’ Beyond that, the pressure is put on the individuals themselves.
