May 28: Make the first day worthwhile

Woo hoo! You’re here!

OK, your first day here the University won’t be throwing a party. We wouldn’t want your first day on campus as a student to be the most exciting day of your four years. But it is a big deal that you’ve finally got to this point, so give yourself a pat on the back.

Today marks the first of many days of freshman orientation. Your first day is a busy one, but for me it’s the easiest. The University already has a full day of events planned for you. Here’s what’s on your agenda, according to the Office of New Student Programs:

  • Meet with your College representatives.
  • Meet new and current students.
  • Learn about the Ui2 Self-Service registration system.
  • Register for your classes.
  • Meet with staff from Financial Aid, Housing, Minority Student Affairs, and other university offices.
  • Get your student identification card (I-Card).

Take advantage of all the information sessions that may be optional. Learn as much as possible, and if you get a chance walk around. This is going to be your home for the next few years, so get used to the surroundings.
