Frerichs refuses calls to run for Lt. Governor

State Senator Mike Frerichs announced Thursday that he is not seeking appointment as Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor.

While honored for being asked, Frerichs believes that he should keep the promise he made four years ago to run for re-election.

Frerichs received repeated calls from County Chairman, General Assembly members, and community advocates encouraging him to run.

While extracting himself from the election, Frerichs hopes for a candidate from outside the Chicago area to be on the ticket with Governor Pat Quinn. The six Democrats running for state wide office are all from Chicago or its southern suburbs. The senator believes that a downstate candidate would add geographic diversity.

Frerichs is currently serving his first term for the 52nd Legislative District after being elected in 2006.
