Women’s tennis falls at Notre Dame

It was another disappointing loss on the road for the No. 31 Illinois women’s tennis team.

On Saturday, the Illini tallied their fifth loss to a top-30 team when they fell 5-2 to No. 17 Notre Dame.

The Irish took the early 1-0 after grabbing sweeping the double point.

Junior Leigh Finnegan returned on the singles court for the first time since Jan. 30 after battling a hip flexor injury. This time playing down at uncommon No. 6 spot, Finnegan answered quickly for the Illini with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kristen Rafael.

But the Irish struck back taking wins on courts 1, 5, 3 and 4, respectively, three of which were in three sets.

Though the match was already decided, senior Megan Fudge defeated Shannon Mathews 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 to close out the day.

Illinois falls to 3-5, while Notre Dame improves to 6-1.

Though the Illini return home for next weekend’s matches, their schedule will not lighten up as they prepare to take on No. 1 Northwestern and No. 47 Harvard.
