Lucky coin flips pay off for Bloomington contractor

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) – Depending on the flip of a coin may not sound like a great way to run a business.

But it’s paid off – not once but twice – for a central Illinois construction company. And paid off well, at that.

Bloomington-based Associated Constructors has landed two jobs this year worth a total of $1.1 million through coin flips.

It turns out that flipping a coin is a legal way to decide the winning bidder on a construction project when two contractors offer matching bids. But it’s rare.

Associated project manager Joel Hartman says the unusual circumstance has happened to his company twice since January.

The projects are at the University of Illinois in Urbana and at El Paso-Gridley High School. Hartman says the jobs will keep about 150 people working.
