Guthrie finishes 2nd at Illinois Open

Illinois men’s golfer Luke Guthrie came up just short at the 61st Illinois Open at Hawthorn Woods Country Club, losing by a single stroke.

The junior would have been the third straight amateur to win the event and just the seventh to win both the Illinois Amateur and Illinois Open titles.

Guthrie shot 5-under-par for the tournament after shooting 1-over on the final day.

He entered the final day at 6-under and had been as low as 9-under, but had trouble on the back nine and couldn’t quite match champion Eric Meierdierks of Wilmette.

Head coach Mike Small also competed, finishing in third with a score of 2-under. Former Illini Garrett Chaussard finished at 6-over and Zach Barlow ended shooting 8-over.
