Red Cross urges others to test smoke alarms

In the midst of the 88th National Fire Prevention Week, the Red Cross is urging people to test their smoke alarms.

Alarms should be installed on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas, according to Erin Miller, communications coordinator at the American Red Cross Central Illinois Chapter.

Alarm batteries should be replaced annually, and the alarm should be tested once a month, Miller said.

She also encouraged families to create a home fire escape plan that families practice twice a year. There should be two escape routes for each room in the house.
