Illinois women’s tennis tops Hawkeyes for 2nd time this season

The Illinois women’s tennis team pulled off its fifth conference win with a 5-2 victory over Iowa on Friday.

The Illini won the doubles point, which down to the last match. Annie McCarthy and Breanne Smutko defeated Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Ally Majerick 9-7 to give Illinois the 1-0 lead.

Transitioning to singles play, McCarthy won her second straight singles match 6-0, 6-2. With the Illini leading 2-0, sophomore Rachael White then won her match 6-4, 6-2, giving Illinois an early opportunity to clinch the match with one more win.

That win would come from freshman Misia Kedzierski, who defeated Christina Harazin 7-5, 6-0, sealing Illinois’ fourth Big Ten win of the season and second against the Hawkeyes.

Illinois will next travel to Evanston, Ill., to face No. 18 Northwestern on Sunday.
