Champaign resident charged in death of homeless man

Jermaine Davis, 36, has plead not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Russell Allan Stokes, 54.

Police were called to the 300 block of East Park Street at 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to the police report. Stokes was found laying next to a building unconscious. He was treated at Carle Hospital during the weekend but died at 12:54 p.m. Sunday. His injuries were consistent with battery.

After reviewing the evidence, police arrested Davis on charges of aggravated battery, which was raised to first-degree murder after Stokes’ death.

The office of the Champaign County State’s Attorney confirmed the charges and said Davis’ bond has been set at $500,000.

Davis is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 7.
