Champaign police detectives reported today that they arrested a male suspect who was connected to an attempted child abduction on Sept. 28.
The suspect, 54-year-old Billy Wayne Mullins of 1402 Comanche in Champaign, was found riding his bicycle on the 1300 block of Fairfax Drive. He was arrested for attempted child abduction and is currently being held in the Champaign County Satellite Jail.
The attempted abduction became known on Sept 29. when a 13-year-old girl reported the incident that happened on the evening of Sept. 28 at the Dobbins Downs Playground.
The victim said the male suspect approached her and told her to come to his home because he needed help with groceries. The incentive he used was offering her candy. When the victim yelled out to gain her friend’s attention, the suspect took off on his bicycle.
Lieutenant Joe Gallo said police are investing other attempted abduction reports. He added that parents and educators are doing a good job of discussing safety tips with their children.

Investigators will continue to follow up on leads to determine if these cases have correlations to the recent arrest.
