Illinois named one of the most disability-friendly colleges

UIUC was recently named one of America’s most disability-friendly colleges in a unique new book, College Success for Students With Physical Disabilities, published earlier this February.

The U of I was listed among four other schools as one of the few Full-Service Colleges in the United States. These are colleges that provide such services as personal care, special transportation, independent living or disability management training, wheelchair repair, adaptive sports, and other services to disabled students.

The book addresses the most pertinent concerns of students with physical disabilities on college campuses: including living arrangements, transportation, classroom necessities and more.

However, Illinois has long held a tradition for welcoming disabled students. Not only are the school’s wheelchair sports teams some of the most competitive in the country, but the facilities on the U of I campus also serve as training grounds for the U.S. Paralympic team. Notable among these athletes is Joshua George, Olympic gold winner at the Beijing Paralypics.
