Update: An arrest was made Tuesday afternoon in connection with the First Midwest Bank robbery. University police arrested suspect Lorenzo P. Cooper, of Champaign, who was then transported to the Champaign County Jail.
A robbery was reported at First Midwest Bank in Champaign this morning. Police were dispatched to the 812 W. Springfield Ave location at 9:06 a.m., according to a press release from the City of Champaign.
The suspect reportedly entered the bank and demanded money from the teller using a note. There was no weapon spotted and no one was hurt. Seven bank employees and one customer were inside the bank at the time of the reported robbery.
The suspect was described as an African American male with a medium build, 5’9” tall, gray beard and between 50 and 60 years old. He was wearing a baseball cap with a five-pointed star in the center of the cap and “US Army” on the bill and a dark blue jacket with “Illinois” across the front and the Chief’s head logo on the back.
The suspect was last seen going North on Prospect Ave by foot with an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank. Champaign police are conducting a search to find the suspect.
