Editor’s note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the University YMCA will host Dr. Perez. The Latina and Latino Studies Graduate Studies Organization will host Dr. Perez. The Daily Illini regrets this error.
The Latina and Latino Studies Graduate Studies Organization will host a free lecture by Dr. William Perez, a professor from Claremont Graduate University whose research focuses on immigration and the achievement of Latinos in higher education.
The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the University YMCA. It will aim to give students perspective on what it means to make it through higher education as an immigrant, and how valuable it is to be accepted as a citizen in the US.
Perez will also speak about the research he has published in his two books, “We ARE Americans: Undocumented Students Pursuing the American Dream” and “Americans by Heart: Undocumented Latino Students and the Promise of Higher Education”.
The event is co-sponsored by the College of Education, the University YMCA, Graduate Organization of Latino/a Students, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan de UIUC, La Colectiva, Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, Department of Latina and Latino Studies, The Student Cultural Programming Fee and The Student Organization Resource Fee.
