University of Illinois welcomes education visionaries

As part of Chancellor Phyllis Wise’s Visioning Excellence Initiative, the office of the chancellor will hold a new seminar series beginning in May. The Research University in the World of the Future series will provide University students, staff and faculty the opportunity to listen to leaders of higher education speak about their visions to evolve in addressing society’s changing needs.

“As we envision our campus 20 to 50 years into the future, we are exploring how to best position the University for continued relevance and impact,” Wise said in a mass email.

Wise recently announced the two speakers scheduled for the spring semester.

The first talk features professor Maria Helena Nazare, newly elected president of the European University Association, or EUA, which will be held in the ballroom of the Alice Campbell Alumni Center from 4 to 5 p.m. May 2. A reception will follow Nazare’s speech. Nazare is the first female president of EUA and serves on the board of directors of Portugal Telecom.

The second speaker Wei Yang, president of Zhejiang University in China, is scheduled to speak on May 31.

Wise also encourages University students, faculty and staff to participate in the visioning survey at go.illinois.edu/visioningsurvey.
