Illini guard Paul fractures jaw in practice, will require surgery

Brandon Paul has started his offseason on a bionic note.

The senior guard for Illinois’ men’s basketball team will have surgery Friday to repair a fractured jaw sustained in an open-gym practice Thursday at Ubben Basketball Complex, Associate Sports Information Director Derrick Burson confirmed Friday.

The injury occurred when Paul inadvertently collided with redshirt freshman Devin Langford’s shoulder while tracking down a loose ball.

Paul could return to practicing on an individual basis in two weeks to participate in non-contact drills, but the specifics won’t be determined until after the surgery, Burson said.

The 6-foot-4 senior led the Illini in points per game last season with 14.7 and was named All-Big Ten third team (coaches) and honorable mention (media) as a junior.
