Urbana chief of staff sentenced in DUI case

Michael Monson, chief of staff to Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing, was sentenced to 18 months of court supervision Friday, after being arrested on the charges of driving under the influence of alcohol last year.

Last March, Monson was arrested by the Urbana Police Department at his apartment on the 1000 block of Kerr Avenue after he was involved in a small car accident with a University student. After the accident, Monson left his car and walked home, according to Urbana Police.

He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, fleeing the scene of an accident and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Monson’s blood alcohol content was above the legal limit, according to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s office.

In addition to the 18 months of supervision, Monson must pay a $1,250 fine, court costs, complete 100 hours of public service, attend a victim impact panel, obtain a substance abuse evaluations and follow recommendations and refrain from having alcohol or illegal drugs.
