Piper leaves women’s basketball team

By By: Stephen Bourbon

The Illinois women’s basketball team announced in a statement Friday that forward Mckenzie Piper will no longer be on the team.

“After discussions this past week with Mckenzie Piper, it is mutually agreed that the Illinois women’s basketball program may not be the best fit for her and she will begin to explore other options,” Bollant said in the release.

Piper, a sophomore, played in 11 games this season, averaging 1.2 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. As a true freshman last season, Piper appeared in 23 games, starting four, and averaged 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

With Piper leaving, the Illini now have 10 available players for the rest of the season. Freshman Kennedy Cattenhead is out for the season with a torn ACL, while Mikaala Shackelford and Kyley Simmons must sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules.
