Two students involved in fatal crash

Two University students, Xiang Cheng and Yuhan Zhang, were involved in a fatal car crash on Illinois route 49 at Homer Lake Road in Champaign County at around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

According to a press release from Illinois State Police, the student’s Mercedes ML350 collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee near the intersection.

Cheng, 19, of Champaign, was driving the Mercedes at the time of the collision. Zhang, 22, of Urbana was a passenger in the car. According to the press release, both students were transported to Carle Foundation Hospital.

“They were traveling with other vehicles to a nearby lake and were unfamiliar with the area,” said Sergeant Brad Kane of the District 10 Illinois State Police.

According to the release, Otis R. Doxtator, 65, of Indianapolis, Ind. was driving the Jeep and was also transported to Carle Foundation Hospital. The other two passengers in this vehicle, Dorothy L Doxtator, 62, and Scott E Doxtator, 33, of Indianapolis, Ind. were pronounced dead at the scene.

“It appears the driver of the Mercedes on the northbound lane swerved onto the southbound lane and it was a head-on collision,” said Kane.

Autopsies have been scheduled for April 21, according to a press release from Duane Northrup, Champaign County Coroner and the causes of death are still under investigation.

At this time, Cheng has been charged with improper lane usage.
