“Scream VI” is a slasher film that premiered March 10, 2023. The movie is the latest installment in the series that began with the original “Scream” in 1996.

“Scream VI” stars “Wednesday” actress Jenna Ortega as Tara, “In The Heights” actress Melissa Barrera as Sam, “Booksmart” actor Mason Gooding as Chad and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy.

The movie is directed by Tyler Gillet and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, co-creators of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence and who previously worked on horror films “Devil’s Due” and “Ready or Not.”

“Friends” and original 1996 “Scream” actress Courtney Cox is also back, reprising her role as Gale Weathers. “Scream VI” follows Tara and her friends, most of which are survivors from the previous attack in 2022’s “Scream,” which shares a name with the original 1996 movie.

Tara’s sister Sam also joins as they juggle fighting for their life once again, this time in New York City, instead of the fictional Woodsboro, California where the previous movies took place.

Neve Campbell, an actress that was featured heavily in earlier “Scream” movies, will not be reprising her role as Sydney. The actress believed her contract and salary that she was offered to was not equal to the value she showed the franchise.

“Scream VI” was attention-grabbing from the moment it started. The movie began with the classic “Scream” scene of a new character on the phone with the killer on the other line.

As always, the victim falls for the trap and ends up getting killed by Ghostface, the “Scream” killer.

The victim was a professor that specializes in horror movies. However, the Ghostface that murdered the Professor is hunted and killed by another Ghostface.

Sam learns about the first Ghostface murder and quickly decides to move with her sister to someplace safer. However, Tara decides to stay in New York and stop letting Ghostface dictate her every move.

A love story is introduced in this film with Tara and Chad connecting through their shared experience with outrunning Ghostface in the last movie.

In the previous “Scream” movies, romance was always present, especially between characters Dewey and Gale. Some fans are comparing Tara and Chad to be the new Dewey and Gale.

Sam also has a new love interest, a neighbor named Danny Brackett, played by Josh Segarra.

Later into the plot of the movie, Tara’s group is persecuted by Ghostface and fought to save their lives. As most horror films go, not everyone makes it.

Near the end of the movie, the majority of viewers and the characters think they’ve figured out who Ghostface is, but everyone is misled.

“Scream VI” does a good job of tying things together so the viewer leaves the theater satisfied with the film. This is reflected in the film’s 7.1/10 IMDb score, scoring higher than the previous film, which had a score of 6.3/10.

The direction the new “Scream” movies are heading is welcomed by many fans and many viewers are excited to see the story continue.
