The Grammy Awards celebrated their 67th annual award show on Sunday, recognizing excellence in the recording industry this past year. The Grammys were full of surprises, going from raising over $7 million for the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires to Lady Gaga premiering a new single.
Trevor Noah hosted for the fifth time, expertly working the A-list crowd. He opened with jokes about everything from artificial intelligence to Beyoncé’s supposedly omnipotent powers.
Noah’s writers didn’t shy away from inserting politics into the script, as evident by some comments in his opening monologue.
“There’s been some changes in Washington,” Noah said at the beginning of the ceremony. “I’m going to enjoy tonight because this may be the last time I get to host anything in this country.”
The current head of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., spoke on the history of the Grammys mid-show. Mason said that the Academy had “listened” to complaints of a lack of transparency in their selection and voting processes. A central voice in the backlash was The Weeknd, who claimed to swear off the award show in 2021 permanently.

However, Mason’s speech ended up being a shocking introduction for the artist, who took the stage in his “return to the Grammys” for a dramatic performance of his song “Timeless” alongside Playboi Carti.
According to Noah, the Grammys chose to support local businesses in Los Angeles with their commercials, with a portion of proceeds going to those impacted by the wildfires. Advertisements shown on CBS included small businesses, showing some collaborating with big names like Doja Cat, Avril Lavigne and the Jonas Brothers.
A website was advertised with a QR code that lingered onscreen throughout the ceremony, encouraging guests and viewers at home to donate to MusiCares’ fire relief efforts. Footage of the devastation caused by the fires was shown between segments.
For the awards portion of the night, Kendrick Lamar stunned with a sweep of Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance and Best Music Video for his single “Not Like Us.” The rapper accepted his awards to calls of “SWEEP” from Taylor Swift and his producer, Mustard.
Beyoncé won her first Album of the Year award, bringing her daughter Blue Ivy on stage with her to accept the award for “COWBOY CARTER.” The Grammy comes just one year after Jay Z publicly called out the Academy on stage for never recognizing his wife.
Doechii made history as the third woman to win Best Rap Album with “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” During her acceptance speech, she shared an emotional message of empowerment for young Black women.
“You are exactly who you need to be; you are exactly where you are,” Doechii said. “And I am a testimony.”
Beyoncé won the award for Best Country Album, making her the first Black woman to win in a country category in over 50 years.
“I think sometimes genre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists, and I just want to encourage people to do what they are passionate about and stay persistent,” Beyoncé said.
Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan earned their first Grammy Awards, winning Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist, respectively. Roan took the opportunity of her acceptance speech to demand a living wage for young artists in the music industry.
“Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” Roan said.
The late 28-time Grammy winner Quincy Jones was honored in a touching tribute from Will Smith, along with performances from Jacob Collier, Stevie Wonder and a particularly electric number from Janelle Monaé.
