April’s media releases inspired reflection and a much-needed shift toward the golden months of summer. Whether you’re in the mood to binge a fresh dramatic TV series, catch an impressive indie film or press play on a powerful album, there’s surely something here for you.
Film: “Sacramento”
Michael Angarano’s “Sacramento” follows the exploration of adulthood and friendships. The film is driven by a spontaneous road trip of two longtime friends, Glenn (Michael Cera) and Rickey (Angarano), as they navigate the uncertainties of their evolving relationship.
The film is set against the sunny backdrop of California, and the narrative’s mix of humor and heartfelt moments represents the nuances of the search for belonging. Both Angarano and Cera capture the quirky nature of their characters perfectly.
In an interview with NPR, Angarano explained the genesis of the film’s title.

“Many people who live in Los Angeles know there are about a million signs all over Los Angeles that say, I-5 North Sacramento,” Angarano said. “And so, initially, the whole premise started as an inside joke between Chris and I … we merged on to the I-5 North Sacramento, and I turned to Chris, just as a joke, and said, hey, you want to go to Sacramento?”
“Sacramento” invites viewers to join this imperfect pair on their formative journey, prompting reflection on the enduring power and occasional awkwardness of lifelong connections. If you’re looking for a lighthearted watch, add this sentimental “on the road” adventure to your watchlist.
TV Series: “Your Friends & Neighbors”
“Your Friends & Neighbors,” created by Jonathan Tropper, was released this month on Apple TV+. This series, much like the platform’s recently popularized drama “Succession,” blends dark comedy with social commentary. Its description on the platform reads, “An irresistible tale of affairs, money, and murder.”
Jon Hamm delivers a compelling performance as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a disgraced hedge fund manager who turns to burglary to maintain his wealthy lifestyle. Viewers watch as Coop navigates this newfound double life.
With a strong supporting cast, including Amanda Peet and Olivia Munn, the on-screen performances effortlessly carry the story’s heavy and violent subject matter. If you’re still pacing for the next “Succession”-style fix, “Your Friends & Neighbors” makes for an entertaining distraction.
Book: “Fahrenheit-182” by Mark Hoppus
In his candid memoir, “Fahrenheit-182,” Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus records his journey from a skate punk teen in the California desert to co-founding one of the most influential pop-punk bands of the ’90s.
The book was co-written with music journalist Dan Ozzi and digs deep into Hoppus’ personal battles with anxiety, depression and a life-threatening cancer diagnosis, offering an unflinching look at the man behind the music. Hoppus doesn’t shy away from the darker chapters of his life, including his emotional struggle following Blink-182’s 2005 breakup.
Amidst these heavy themes, Hoppus infuses his narrative with the wit and levity fans have come to expect from this punk rock icon. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the popular band or new to their story, this compelling and vulnerable book is worth reading.
Music Album: “Send a Prayer My Way” by Julien Baker & TORRES
Julien Baker and TORRES’ “Send A Prayer My Way” emerges from a shared desire to explore their Southern roots, channeling a defiant and working-class spirit akin to outlaw country.
This collaboration, born from a backstage conversation in Chicago, blends their established indie rock sensibilities with the storytelling traditions of country music. The album itself is woven together by radical empathy and second chances, offering listeners a raw and honest journey through the songmakers’ feelings.
“It’s just interesting that there’s a cultural shift happening where people are recognizing the greatness of country music,” Baker told NME regarding the album’s country-inspired nature.
Southern charm permeates each song on “Send a Prayer My Way,” from its earthy lyricism to the meridional track titles. This album will surely inspire a backcountry summer for those who listen.
